How to create a nightlight using eco-healthy materials?
Item List:
One solar garden light module (cheap buy from hardware/online stores, or reuse from old solar lights)
One glass jar for one nightlight.
One rechargeable AA battery (comes with the solar module, although you may have to replace it, if you’re using an old one).
One LED light (comes with the solar module)
Tissue paper/ frosted paper to diffuse the light
Strong adhesive (eg. glue gun)
Optional: decorative stones, stickers, shells etc.
Procedure:
1. From the solar module get your solar panel + LED + battery.
Side note: Make sure the battery is rechargeable (like Li-ion). Most solar modules have their own rechargeable batteries, if you’re not buying your own make sure the one solar module’s one is up to the standard. The battery may also wear out after a year or two, in that case just replace the battery.
2. Now, prepare the jar. You should clean it, add tissue paper for a softer glow, and decorate the inside using shells, stones. For kids, decorate with stars or leaf silhouettes.
3. For the assembling, you can easily fit the solar panel on top of your jar. Place the solar panel upwards, so it faces the sunlight. Secure the panel with a strong adhesive. Make sure to not cover the solar panel surface, or damage any other part, such as the LED.
4. Leave your nightlight out in the sun during the day for charging.
5. Voila! At night you have your custom made nightlight.
Fun variations:
Make a lantern: firmly wrap a wire beneath the jar lid.
Pathway lights: use multiple jars and place them along a garden path.
For kids: use fun silhouettes: stars and leaves.
How is it eco-healthy?
1. You’re converting sunlight into electricity. This is the most efficient way to save our environment from other harmful electricity sources.
2. You’re using solar panels, which last long and are durable.
3. When your battery runs out, you can easily replace the battery, instead of throwing the whole lamp away.
4. You utilized a reused jar, so no excess glass or plastic waste.
5. For the decoration, use non-plastic, biodegradable decors such as natural stones, shells and leaves.
